20 months after the Costa Concordia ran aground and capsized off the shores of an Italian island; the cruise ship has been lifted and righted. Because of the unique circumstances surrounding this operation, engineers used complex process called parbuckling to lift the ship. Here you can see and animated image with the 4 basic steps used for lifting the ship along with numerous cranes on barges surrounding the righted Costa Concordia.
Before the operation there were many doubters the ship could raise from the water in one piece. Nothing of this size had ever been parbuckled. This is not only a testament to the salvage master and his crew but also for the advancements in industrial lifting and rigging equipment. Although the ship has now been righted there is still many months of work left as crews as they shore up the damaged ship so they can tow it from the area.
